Baggage

Checked baggage

Checked baggage will be carried without payment of additional charges under the following conditions:

  • a maximum of two pieces per fare paying passenger;
  • the combined weight of the two pieces of baggage will not exceed 20 kilos except when a higher weight is stipulated on the booking;
  • the total dimensions of any checked baggage (length + width + height) shall not exceed 158 cm (62 inches). Additionally, the carrier reserves the right to refuse any single piece of checked baggage weighing more than 32 kilos. Please note the fees below for baggage exceeding the free baggage allowance:

Excess baggage

Checked baggage exceeding the allowances will be accepted on a stand-by basis, subject to space availability, and at a charge of:

For departures from:

  • Canada, United States and sun destinations* and any country other than those specified: CAD $20.00/USD $18.00 per kilo.
  • Cuba: 18.00 CUC (Cuban Convertible Peso) per kilo. There are currency exchange options onsite in Varadero and Holguin only.

*Sun destinations include the Caribbean, Central and South America, the Dominican Republic and Mexico.

When two or more passengers travelling to the same destination on the same flight present themselves and their baggage for check-in at the same time and place, their maximum free baggage allowance will be the sum of their individual maximum free allowances. Infants in arms are not entitled to free baggage allowance unless a seat has been purchased for that infant.

Carry-on baggage

Each passenger is permitted one piece in the cabin which may be no larger than 23 cm x 40 cm x 50 cm (or 9 x 16 x 20 inches) and weigh no more than 5 kilos. Carry-on baggage exceeding 5 kilos must be checked in. Bags with built-in rollerboards will not be accepted in the cabin unless the dimensions including wheels and handles are as outlined above.

Items included as carry-on baggage: any kind of baggage or suitcase, briefcase, laptop computer bag, diaper bag, camera case with spare lens and film that are in addition to the camera itself, cartons, boxes and other similar items.

Items which may be carried on in addition to the passenger’s carry-on bag: cameras, coats, diplomatic or consular bags, purses (10" x 12" x 8" or less), receptacles containing human remains, child restraint systems and approved infant car seats (only permitted when a seat has been purchased).

Security restrictions: carry-on baggage is subject to rules and regulations outlined by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA). For information on what is permitted please visit http://www.catsa-acsta.gc.ca.

Special items

Bicycles: Handlebars must be fixed sideways and the tires deflated. Must be placed in a solid bag or box, or other suitable travel case. Plastic bags are available for purchase at Canadian check-in counters. A fee of CAD $50 each way will be payable at check-in.

Golf Equipment: No charge up to 20 kilos. In order to keep the contents intact, golf bags must be covered, preferably in a hard-sided container. Limited to a regular sized golf bag consisting of: 14 clubs, 12 golf balls and 1 pair of shoes. 

Scuba Equipment: No charge up to 20 kilos; consisting of 1 tank, 1 air regulator, 1 mask and 1 set of fins. Scuba tanks must be empty of all oxygen and the pressure gauges protected. Thomas Cook Canada recommends a waiting period of at least 24 hours between the last dive and flight check-in time. It is however, the sole responsibility of the individual to determine what pre-flight waiting period following their dive is safest for them.

Snorkeling Equipment: No charge up to 5 kilos; consisting of 1 mask, 1 snorkel and 1 set of fins.

Windsurfing Equipment: Consisting of one windsurf board and/or one mast boom and/or sail. A special request should be sent in advance to Thomas Cook Canada’s Customer Service Department due to the limited quantity we can accept on board each flight. If mast is more than 10 feet long, it must be detached from the board. If mast is less than 10 feet long, it must be attached to the board. A fee of CAD $100 round trip per unit will be payable at check-in.

Surfboards: Any regular size surfboard not more than 12 feet long and weighing a maximum of 20 kilos. A fee of CAD $100 round trip per unit will be payable at check-in.

Kayaks: A fee of CAD $100 round trip per unit will be payable at check-in.

Kite Boards: Includes kite board and power kite to a maximum of 150 cm. No charge for carriage of kite boards, including packaging, weighing up to 20 kilos or less.

Boogie Boards: One board per passenger up to a maximum of 5 feet in length. No charge for carriage of boogie boards, including packaging, weighing 5 kilos or less.

Skateboards: One skateboard per passenger not to exceed 10 kilos.

Ice Skates or Rollerblades: One pair per passenger. Must be contained in a skate bag. No charge up to 20 kilos including packaging.

Camping, Hiking or Mountaineering Equipment: One bag per passenger may consist of one sleeping bag, one tent and accessories. Only new stoves or nullified used canisters will be accepted. No fuel sources will be accepted according to Dangerous Goods regulations. No charge up to 20 kilos.

Fishing Equipment: One set per passenger including 1 fishing rod and 1 tackle box. No charge up to 10 kilos.

Hunting Equipment Firearms: Can only be admitted in cargo and must be packed in a rigid case with proper identification. Ammunition is forbidden, including separate boxes. Passengers must conform to the standards of destination country. If checking in a hand-gun, passengers need to present a Registered Firearm License and a Permit to carry or transport. If checking in a rifle passengers need to present a Firearm License (formerly FAC-Firearm Acquisition Certificate). No charge up to 20 kilos.

Horse Shoes: Shoes must be packed in a secure container or bag. No charge up to 20 kilos. 

Musical instruments

  • Small size instruments such as flutes, trumpets, horns, violins:  Such instruments must not be larger than 23 cm x 40 cm x 51 cm. Small instruments must be carried onboard as carry-on baggage and fit under the passenger seat. No charge.
  • Medium size instruments such as drums, guitars, saxophones: Instruments larger than 23 cm x 40 cm x 51 cm must be checked in. Such instruments must be packed in a rigid case. Passengers must sign a Limited Release Tag if the instrument is not packaged in a suitable travel case. Subject to excess baggage fees once passenger’s free baggage weight allowance has been exceeded.
  • Large size/heavy instruments such as cello, keyboard, speaker boxes: Instruments larger than 23 cm x 40 cm x 51 cm must be checked in. Instrument must be packed in a rigid case. Passengers must sign a Limited Release Tag if the instrument is not packaged in a suitable travel case. Subject to excess baggage fees once passenger’s free baggage weight allowance has been exceeded.

Tennis Racquets: Tennis racquets may be accepted as carry-on baggage as long as they are not larger than 23 cm x 40 cm x 51 cm. No charge up to 10 kilos.

Wedding Dresses: Dress must be contained in a garment bag and may be carried on the aircraft in addition to regular sized carry-on baggage. Dresses must be placed in the overhead bin only, as there are no closet facilities onboard. No charge. 

Ashes: Must be placed in an urn that is hermetically sealed by the funeral home. The passenger must have the urn x-rayed by security and provide both the cremation certificate as well as the certificate of death. Steel boxes or heavy urns must be checked in. No charge.
 
Children's Accessories and Strollers: Strollers will normally be taken at the cabin door for storage in the cargo hold, and returned to the passenger loading bridge on arrival. All other accessories are to be checked baggage and should be packed appropriately to prevent damage. One (1) car seat plus one (1) courtesy item per infant/child will be allowed at no charge. Any additional items are subject to excess baggage charges. Courtesy items are any one of the following: play pens, strollers, bassinets, high chair, jolly jumper, exersaucer.

Wheelchairs, Mobility Aids and Electric Mobility Scooters: Where possible, the passenger may use their own manual wheelchair up to the aircraft at which point it would be stowed in the hold. On arrival, every attempt is made to have the wheelchair or mobility aid available for the passenger at the door of the aircraft, on the passenger loading bridge. Carrier is not able to accept wheelchairs, mobility aids or electric mobility scooters with spillable (wet) or lithium batteries that contain in excess of 25 grams of equivalent lithium content. The passenger will be expected to provide evidence of battery type upon check-in. Wheelchairs, mobility aids and scooters will be accepted as priority checked baggage. No charge; no limit on pieces. 

Limitations of Liability

It is recommended that passengers purchase insurance and all baggage be locked whenever possible.  Passengers should keep valuables, important documents, and money either on their person or in carry-on baggage including necessary prescription medicines.

Liability for loss, delay or damage to baggage is in accordance with limitations as set by the Montreal Convention, the Warsaw Convention (as amended by The Hague) and tariff regulations. Thomas Cook Canada shall not be liable for loss, damage or delay of fragile, perishable or valuable items including but not limited to, money, jewelry, valuables, keys, eyeglasses and eyewear, memory cards, silverware, negotiable papers, securities, business documents, samples, liquids, food and other perishables, computers and laptops, prescription drugs, medication and small medical devices placed in checked baggage, photographic equipment and accessories, video equipment, cellular telephones, artistic items, chinaware/ceramics/pottery, electronic and mechanical items/equipment, glass, musical instruments and equipment, electrical appliances, statues, art and art supplies, tools of business and trade, paper (includes photographs/negatives/prints/historical documents/maps), sporting goods (for example; tennis rackets, scuba gear, fishing rods, surfboards, sporting trophies such as animal antlers and horns), whether the non-acceptable property is included in the passengers' checked baggage with or without the knowledge of Thomas Cook Canada. Unless otherwise specified, a valuable will be deemed any item whose value is CAD $500 or more.

Thomas Cook Canada shall have no liability for any damage to baggage in the form of scratches, dents, scuffs, soiling, nicks, or to handles, straps, seams, zippers, frames, foot rests, wheels or locks, or resulting from manufacturer's defect(s), normal wear and tear or adverse weather conditions. In addition, Thomas Cook Canada shall not be liable when damage or partial loss occurs after the completion of a limited release tag as set forth thereon and further. Further, Thomas Cook Canada will not be liable for damage resulting from inspections by authorities responsible for security screening.

Delayed, Lost or Damaged Baggage and Lost / Found Articles

If your bag has not arrived with you or if damage is noted, it is important that you notify a Thomas Cook Canada airport agent immediately. Details of your baggage will be entered into our computerized baggage system and you will be provided with a reference number.

Although Thomas Cook Canada cannot assume responsibility for items left onboard an aircraft or in an airport, we will do our best to assist you in locating these items.
